How Team Builds Work in DragonSword: Awakening

In the PC action RPG DragonSword: Awakening, players do not design a custom avatar or manually distribute individual stat points. Instead, creating DragonSword Awakening builds centers entirely on team composition, Status Ailment synergies, and mastering the game's real-time switching mechanics.

With 19 unique pre-made Heroes available, your build is defined by how well your chosen trio coordinates their elemental and physical effects. Success relies on chaining continuous tag-team combos using Status Ailments such as Bleed, Poison, Freeze, Burn, Shock, Stun, Knockdown, and Airborne.

Core Combat Mechanics for Synergy Builds

To maximize the efficiency of your team build, you must master the relationship between character skills and combat mechanics. The game relies heavily on active swapping rather than staying on a single character.

The Animation Stacking Trick

The Switching Signals mechanic allows you to swap characters mid-battle. A powerful advanced technique involves swapping characters immediately after initiating a skill with a long animation. For example, if you trigger Castella's axe spin and immediately swap to another Hero, Castella will remain on the field to finish her attack while your newly active character begins attacking. This allows you to stack damage from multiple Heroes simultaneously.

To execute this damage-stacking method:

1Initiate a long-animation skill
2Immediately swap characters using Switching Signals
3Attack with the newly active Hero
4Stack simultaneous damage on the target

Triggering Airborne Combos

Airborne combos are key to keeping enemies crowd-controlled and defenseless. To launch an enemy, you must first deplete their break bar (the gauge located directly below their health bar). Once the break bar is empty, any attack featuring the airborne effect—indicated by a blue wing icon, such as Johnny's Phantom Slash—will launch the enemy into the air for follow-up juggles.

Boss Lock-On Swap

When fighting large bosses, make use of the lock-on prompt before swapping characters. Triggering the lock-on and then swapping keeps one character locked onto the target's specific weak point, allowing you to execute precise ground skills with your active character without losing tracking.

New characters are unlocked using Destiny Invitations, which you exchange in the in-game menu. You receive one invitation at the start of the game and can earn more by progressing through the main story.

While the actual starting characters of the game's story are Lute, Johnny, and Castella, you will want to expand your roster quickly. When planning your initial team builds, prioritize unlocking these high-tier Heroes to establish strong Status Ailment coverage:

HeroPrimary Role & Status AilmentsWhy They Fit Your Build
CharlottePoison / Airborne / KnockdownProvides exceptional utility, setup potential, and easy Airborne triggers once break bars are depleted.
RoxyRanged BleedHighly mobile ranged damage dealer who safely applies consistent damage-over-time from a distance.
TheresiaBleed / StunOffers excellent wide-range crowd control to lock down groups of enemies.
DonnaFreeze / SummonerSummons an ice golem that acts as a tank while freezing targets to halt enemy movement.

Note: While starting characters like Lute, Johnny, and Castella introduce you to combat, unlockable characters like Asteria have no initial status ailment abilities in their kit. You will rely on early unlocks like Charlotte or Roxy to begin building status-focused team synergies.
